Spotlight – Cybersecurity
With cybersecurity being in the news again with the recent attack on London Drugs, I wanted to comment on a few ways to reduce your business’s cyber security risk.
Traditional antivirus software alone is no longer good enough to protect organizations from today’s threats. EDR and MDR are advanced cybersecurity solutions that offer more comprehensive protection compared to traditional antivirus software. We believe these tools should form part of your business’s cyber-security stack to address the complex and evolving threat landscape.
Modality includes EDR and MDR cybersecurity coverage in our Fully Managed plans.
Cyber-security is a journey, not a destination.
- Continuous Improvement: Cybersecurity is not a one-time task that you complete and then forget about. Instead, it’s an ongoing process that requires constant vigilance, adaptation, and improvement. Just like a journey, it involves continuous learning, assessment, and adjustment.
- Evolving Threat Landscape: The digital world is constantly evolving, and so are cyber threats. New vulnerabilities, attack techniques, and malicious actors emerge regularly. Organizations and individuals must stay informed about these changes and adapt their security measures accordingly.
- Risk Management: Rather than aiming for absolute security (which is often unattainable), cybersecurity focuses on managing risks effectively. It’s about making informed decisions based on risk assessments, cost-benefit analyses, and threat prioritization. Just as travelers assess risks during a journey (e.g., weather conditions, road safety), cybersecurity professionals evaluate risks associated with different assets and systems.
- Layers of Defense: Effective cybersecurity involves multiple layers of defense. These layers can include firewalls, intrusion detection systems, encryption, access controls, regular software updates, employee training, and incident response plans. Just as a traveler might use a combination of maps, GPS, and local advice to navigate a journey, organizations use a combination of security tools and practices.
- Adaptability: Cybersecurity strategies must adapt to changing circumstances. As technology evolves (e.g., cloud computing, IoT devices), security practices must evolve too. Similarly, travelers adjust their plans based on unexpected events (e.g., flight delays, road closures).
- Collaboration: Cybersecurity is a collective effort. Organizations, governments, and individuals need to collaborate to share threat intelligence, best practices, and lessons learned. Just as travelers rely on travel guides, fellow travelers, and local communities, cybersecurity professionals benefit from collaboration within the industry.
- Education and Awareness: Like learning about local customs and language during a journey, cybersecurity education is crucial. Users need to understand safe practices (e.g., avoiding phishing emails, using strong passwords) to protect themselves and their organizations. Modality provides Cyber Security and Awareness training – contact us to get started.
We highly recommend undertaking a cyber-security risk and assessment review if your business hasn’t completed one. Reach out to us to get started on your cyber-security journey today.
